This is a half-hour documentary film that I worked on looking at the aesthetics of various religious practices in and around York. It was part of a series for The ‘Yorkshire Media Consortium’.
What’s special about this film is that there are no voice-overs, no judgements or opinions, just my own style of moving image interpretation of the footage. This is an early example of the development of my style. It incorporates Jungian Archetypes as visual devices and the manipulation of time inspired by Eastern European and Russian filmmakers such as Andrei Tarkovsky.
My aim when sculpting this film in time, was to take the viewer on a journey into their own unconscious mind through this subliminal, almost hypnotic gaze in order to free the mind of prejudice and preconceptions; to clear the way for the viewer to pose deeper questions of themselves and of the film and its content and poetry.
